UPSC IAS Exam Minimum Age Requirement | UPSC IAS Exam Eligibility
One of the most important aspects of the UPSC IAS exam eligibility requirements is the age limit. As of August 1, 2024, the UPSC age eligibility criteria 2024 are given below:
- General: The minimum age eligibility for the General Category is 21 years, while the maximum age is 32 years for applicants.
- OBC: For candidates from this category, the age limit is 21 years to 35 years.
- SC/ST: The age eligibility for this category ranges from 21 to 37 years.
- PwBD: For PwBD Candidates, the minimal age limit is 21 years, and the upper age limit is up to 42 years.
Special Case Scenarios I UPSC Eligibility Age
The UPSC has shared some special case scenarios for Age Limit Eligibility
- In a special scenario age of relaxation on the basis of physical disability, you need to meet the physical and medical standards under the category of PwBD by the government. You need a certificate of disability issued by the govt. or a valid appointing authority.
- The term ex-servicemen will apply to the person defined so by the Ex-servicemen (Re-employment in Civil Services and Posts) Rules, 1979, as amended from time to time.
- If you belong to any of the categories of ST, SC, or OBC and also under the categories of ex-servicemen, blind, deaf-mute, orthopedically handicapped, etc., you will be eligible for the grant of cumulative age relaxation under both the categories.
Some Exceptions: UPSC Age Criteria
- If you are in your final year of university or appearing for your undergraduate final exam and waiting for your results, you are eligible to apply for CSE Prelims.
- If you complete UPSC Prelims and intend to appear for Undergraduate, you will need to provide proof of your graduation by attaching your Undergraduate Certificate to your Undergraduate application.
- Graduation from Other Universities: In exceptional cases, UPSC may allow you to appear for IAS exams even if you do not have a degree from the above universities but have passed the final year examination from any other institute whose level is recognized by UPSC. to attend CSE.
- Technical and Professional Qualifications: If you have professional and technical qualifications recognized by the . if equivalent to a professional and technical degree, you are eligible for this exam.
- MBBS/Medical Course Final Exam: If you have passed the MBBS or any other medical course final exam but have not yet completed your internship,
- You are still eligible to appear for UPSC Mains provisionally if you submit the university/institute copy of a certificate of passing a medical examination along with the application.
- In this case, you must have your original diploma or university certificate proving that you have completed your degree at the time of the interview (including the internship).
How many attempts for UPSC IAS Exam?
Age limit for general category candidate is 32 years but that doesn’t mean he can write this exam as many times as he wants. There are certain restrictions on the number of times you can take this exam, which again vary with different categories.
- Number of Attempts for the IAS Exam: General Category: 6 attempts for age up to 32 years.
- Number of Attempts for the IAS Exam. Tests: OBC: 9 attempts up to 35 years.
- Number of attempts in the IAS Exam: SC/ST: Unlimited number of attempts up to 37 years.
Note. There will be 9 attempts in the examinations of physically challenged/ handicapped persons belonging to the general category up to the age prescribed by UPSC (42 years).
How Do You Calculate Your UPSC IAS Exam Attempts?
If you appear in any civil service pre-examination, your attempt will count. If you filled out the UPSC application form but did not appear for the prelims, your attempt will not count.
What Education Required for UPSC CSE/IAS Exam?
- Graduate of any university established under an Act of the Central or State Legislature of India
- Recognized as a university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.
- Degree obtained by correspondence or distance learning.
- Open university degree.
